How Fast Do Babies Grow Out of Clothes? A Real Mum's Guide
Before having children, I assumed baby clothes would last for months.
The reality was very different.
One of the biggest surprises of parenthood was just how quickly babies grow, especially during their first year. As a mum of three, I've learned that some sizes seem to disappear in a flash, while others stick around much longer than expected.
If you're wondering how many clothes to buy in each size, understanding how quickly babies grow can save you a lot of money and help avoid overbuying.
The First Year Moves Fast
The smallest sizes often get the least wear.
My first baby was 9lb 6oz at birth and only wore newborn clothing for around six weeks. My second baby was smaller at 7lb 6oz but still only spent about ten days in newborn clothes before moving up a size.
It taught me very quickly that buying lots of newborn clothing simply wasn't necessary for our family.
Most babies grow rapidly through:
- Newborn
- 0-3 months
- 3-6 months
- 6-12 months
Before you know it, they're wearing clothes that looked enormous only a few months earlier.
Some Sizes Barely Get Worn
One thing I've noticed across all three of my children is that certain sizes can almost get skipped.
Sometimes a growth spurt arrives out of nowhere and suddenly clothes that fitted perfectly a few weeks ago are too small.
We've even jumped from sizes like 6-7 years straight into 8-9 years after a growth spurt, meaning we barely used some of the clothes we had prepared.
This is another reason why buying everything new can feel frustrating.
It Slows Down As They Get Older
The good news is that growth usually becomes less dramatic as children get older.
For us, things started to slow down around age two or three.
Clothes lasted longer, growth became more predictable and it became easier to plan ahead.
That's one reason why I find buying ahead much easier now than I did during the baby stage.
Seasons Can Be Tricky
One thing that can catch parents out is buying for the wrong season.
A cosy winter outfit might seem like a bargain, but if your child doesn't reach that size until summer, it may never get worn.
Over time, I've become much better at predicting what sizes my children will need and when.
I still get it wrong occasionally, but experience definitely helps.
Why I Always Buy Ahead
These days, I almost always have the next size waiting.
If I spot a bargain or find something I know my children will love, I'll buy it and put it away for later.
Sometimes I even buy two sizes ahead.
Having a stash of future sizes means I'm rarely caught out when a growth spurt arrives.
It also allows me to be more selective and buy quality pieces when I find them rather than rushing to replace everything at once.
Preloved Makes Growth Spurts Less Painful
One of the best things about buying preloved baby and children's clothing is that growth spurts don't feel quite so expensive.
Children can outgrow perfectly good clothes long before they've worn them out.
Buying second hand means you're spending less on items that may only fit for a short period of time.
It also makes it easier to buy ahead without feeling like you're investing a fortune in clothes your child won't wear for months.
My Advice for New Parents
If you're expecting your first baby, my biggest piece of advice would be not to buy too much in any one size.
Start with the basics, see how your baby grows and add more as needed.
Babies are all different and what works for one child won't necessarily work for another.
Most importantly, don't panic if they suddenly seem to grow overnight. It happens to all of us.
Final Thoughts
Babies grow far faster than most parents expect, especially during their first year.
Buying fewer clothes, choosing good quality basics and thinking ahead can save both money and stress.
Three children later, I still get surprised by the occasional growth spurt, but having the next size ready has made life a lot easier.
