Is Boden Children’s Clothing Worth It? My Experience Buying It Preloved

Boden is one of those brands I always get excited to see arriving at Second Snuggle.

But here’s the slightly strange thing. I don’t really buy Boden new.

I love the brand, but because I know how well Boden children’s clothing can last, I would much rather find it preloved.

After years of handling second hand children’s clothes through Second Snuggle, Boden is consistently one of the brands that stands out for quality. It washes well, lasts and, importantly, parents actually want to buy it again second hand.

So, is Boden children’s clothing worth the money? Here’s my experience.

Why I Rate Boden Children’s Clothes

For me, one of the biggest tests of children’s clothing is how it looks after it has actually been worn and washed.

Almost anything can look lovely when it’s brand new.

The real test is how it looks after a child has worn it, it’s been through the washing machine repeatedly and perhaps even been passed down to somebody else.

That’s where I find Boden does particularly well.

The fabrics generally hold up, the clothes tend to keep their shape and many of the designs don’t feel dated after one season.

Boden Dresses Are Particularly Good Preloved

Dresses are one of the Boden categories I particularly like.

They also tend to sell quickly when they arrive at Second Snuggle.

One of my favourite preloved finds ever was a Boden tutu skirt that I found in a charity shop for £3. It’s exactly the kind of find that reminds me why I love shopping second hand.

Boden has lots of distinctive prints and designs, so preloved is also a great way to find older pieces that are no longer available new.

Jumpers and Joggers Sell Well Too

It isn’t just the prettier pieces.

Boden jumpers and joggers also sell quickly for us.

These are exactly the kinds of everyday clothes where durability matters. Children need to be able to actually play in their clothes, and parents need to be able to wash them without worrying about everything immediately losing its shape.

That practical quality is a big part of why I think Boden works so well in the preloved market.

Is Boden Expensive?

Bought new, Boden can certainly be more expensive than many high-street and supermarket children’s brands.

That’s one of the reasons I think buying it preloved makes so much sense.

You get the quality and design without having to pay the original price.

And because Boden tends to last well, buying it second hand doesn’t necessarily mean buying something that feels particularly “used”. Plenty of Boden clothing arrives with us still looking fantastic.

Does Buying Better Quality Actually Matter?

I think it does, particularly if clothes are going to be passed between siblings or sold afterwards.

WRAP has identified extending clothing life as a major opportunity to reduce the carbon, water and waste footprints associated with clothing. If clothes last longer, they need replacing less frequently.

That matches what I see every day.

The best children's clothing can go from one family to another and still have plenty of life left.

Would I Buy Boden New?

I personally don't tend to.

That isn't because I don't think it's worth owning. It's almost the opposite.

I know there is so much great preloved Boden available that I would look second hand first.

If I found something new that I absolutely loved, that's different. But for everyday shopping, I'd rather wait for a good preloved piece.

What I Look For When Buying Boden Preloved

As with any second hand clothing, condition matters.

I look for clear photographs, a good description and any signs of wear being shown honestly.

I don't necessarily expect preloved clothing to be absolutely perfect. A small mark that has been clearly photographed doesn't automatically bother me.

I'd much rather know exactly what I'm buying.

So, Is Boden Worth It?

For me, yes, but I particularly think Boden is worth buying preloved.

The clothing generally washes well, lasts and has the quality needed to be passed from one child to another.

Dresses, jumpers and joggers are some of my favourite Boden items to look out for, and they're also some of the pieces I see parents buying quickly when they arrive at Second Snuggle.

Final Thoughts

After handling thousands of pieces of children's clothing, you start to notice which brands survive real family life.

Boden is one of them.

I don't think parents need to spend a fortune dressing their children, which is exactly why I love the preloved market.

You can buy a brand such as Boden for much less than its original price, enjoy it, pass it down and potentially pass it on again afterwards.

For me, that's when paying for quality really starts to make sense.
