My Biggest Mistakes Buying Baby Clothes (And What I'd Do Differently)
When I had my first baby, I thought I was prepared.
I'd bought clothes, organised drawers and filled the wardrobe with tiny outfits that looked adorable.
Looking back, I made plenty of mistakes.
The good news is that most parents do. The even better news is that they're easy to avoid once you know what really gets used.
Buying Everything Brand New
Without question, my biggest mistake was assuming everything had to be new.
I spent far more than I needed to and often bought clothes that were only worn once or twice before being outgrown.
Now I know that many preloved baby clothes are barely worn and can offer excellent value while still looking fantastic.
If I could go back, I would buy much more second hand and save the money for other things.
Buying Too Many Outfits
I absolutely loved buying baby outfits.
Tiny trousers, little jumpers, matching sets and special occasion clothes all seemed essential at the time.
The reality was very different.
Most days my babies wore sleepsuits because they were comfortable, practical and easy to change.
Many of the outfits I bought barely left the drawer.
Underestimating How Fast Babies Grow
Nothing prepares you for how quickly babies outgrow clothing.
It felt like I was constantly moving clothes into storage and bringing the next size out.
Because of this, buying lots of expensive clothing in the smallest sizes simply didn't make sense for our family.
Ignoring Practical Features
One thing I wish someone had told me earlier was how much easier zips are than poppers.
When you're changing nappies in the middle of the night, every little thing matters.
Zipped sleepsuits quickly became favourites in our house because they made life so much easier.
Buying Too Much
This is probably the biggest lesson of all.
It is incredibly easy to overbuy when you're expecting a baby.
Family and friends often buy gifts, you receive hand-me-downs and before you know it, you have more clothes than your baby could ever wear.
If I was starting again, I would buy less and wait to see what was actually needed.
What I'd Do Differently
If I was preparing for a baby now, I would focus on:
- Vests
- Sleepsuits
- Sleeping bags
- A few practical outfits
- Buying ahead when I find bargains
Most importantly, I wouldn't feel pressure to fill every drawer before the baby arrives.
Final Thoughts
Every parent makes mistakes when buying baby clothes.
The good news is that babies don't care whether they're wearing the latest outfit or a well-loved sleepsuit.
Three children later, I've learned that comfort, practicality and quality matter far more than having lots of clothes.
